2013: Congratulations to Professor ELLEN METZGER!
Ellen Metzger, who holds appointments in Geology and Science Education in the College of Science at San José State, combines the perspectives of a working scientist and a gifted educator in her efforts to help students and Bay Area teachers learn more about sustainability. Ellen's work in the area of sustainability education is impressive, multi-faceted, and far-reaching. Notably, she has served since 1990 as Co-Director of the Bay Area Earth Science Institute (www.baesi.org) a professional development program for teachers of grades 4-12. BAESI offers summer and academic year workshops for teachers. Under Ellen's leadership, BAESI has helped scores of teachers include sustainability education in their classrooms. Many of Ellen's other projects also focus on sustainability education, such as her NASA-funded Climate Literacy using New Media project and her Heller Foundation-funded California Alliance for Sustainability (CASE) at SJSU program, both of which help teachers understand sustainability and climate change science and how to teach it to their students. In addition, Ellen is currently co-authoring a book about sustainability and education, which will be available soon! 2012: Congratulations to DEAN ELAINE CHIN!
Elaine Chin, Dean of the Lurie College of Education, has long been a champion of sustainability in her personal life, and since assuming leadership roles in the College has brought issues of sustainability to the fore in her professional endeavors as well. Notably, Dean Chin has fostered and encouraged meaningful dialogue about sustainability both within the College and University-wide, resulting in significant change in the minds of many at SJSU and in the community regarding its importance. Next time you see her, ask her about why she thinks sustainability is important, and what it has to do with education!
2011: Congratulations to PROFESSOR ROBIN LOVE!
Winner of the SJSU campus-wide ecological footprint challenge.
Robin Love, a faculty member in the department of Child and Adolescent Development, won the AY 2010-2011 campus-wide Ecological Footprint Challenge in the category of greatest ecological footprint reduction for a San José State faculty member. Dr. Love reduced her ecological footprint by 45% from October to April by making informed choices in her day-to-day living. Next time you see her, ask her how she did it!
